This is the meat and potatoes of orthodontics! Usually the optimal time to treat is when the last primary molars are just starting to get loose. There are many advantages to postponing treatment until this point in time, provided that the significant early problems described in the “young children” segment are not present.
Invisalign Orthodontics
The largest growing segment seeking orthodontic treatment is adults. About 20 percent of patients are over 18 these days. Many factors have contributed to this phenomenon. Increased dental awareness, higher esthetic standards, and greater acceptance of adult braces are probably the most likely. Esthetic “invisible” braces such as ceramic brackets and “Invisalign” have helped to increase this momentum.
Braces
Your teeth and bones don’t stop changing after your braces come off. In fact, people that have had bad bites that were corrected are more likely to change than people who naturally had good bites. The most significant changes can occur within the first year as it takes about nine months for your teeth, gums, and bones to get “used” to this new position. As if your teeth where in wet cement, it takes time to set. In the meantime, retainers are critical to wear for maintaining your new beautiful smile. After this time period, it is up to you. How long to wear the retainer they ask...how long do you want your teeth to be perfectly straight I answer! I will repeat this...your teeth and bones don’t stop changing after your braces come off, the body goes through changes throughout life, some people more than others. Let’s face it the teeth are not going to get any straighter!

Teeth Whitening
The best known and widely used is Invisalign®. This consists of a series of plastic trays, similar to bleaching trays, that progressively adjust tooth position. These trays have the advantage of being the least noticeable (truly almost invisible) and are removable. The disadvantage is its limited ability to move teeth efficiently, thus making a given correction take longer than conventional braces, as well as inability to correct more difficult malocclusions to a quality finish. Case selection is important as only minor malocclusions in the adult dentition should be treated this way. We will advise you if you are a candidate for Invisalign® treatment at the initial exam
General Dentistry
Dr. Laurence C. Articolo is an orthodontic specialist who has practiced in South Jersey for over ten years now Originally from Hammonton, NJ, he attended Rutgers College, New Brunswick for his Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry. He went on to receive his Doctorate in Dental Surgery at the University of North Carolina in 1998. After a fellowship in Advanced General Dentistry, he was accepted in the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine Orthodontic Program and graduated in high esteem. Dr. Articolo has received multiple awards and distinctions in the field of dentistry and orthodontics, as well as given many presentations and written publications in highly respected journals. He is currently a member of the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Department of Orthodontics, and also lectures at Virtua West Jersey Hospital in Camden. The Cherry Hill resident is big fan of the Eagles and Phillies, enjoys golf, tennis, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.
