Dr. Kanarek obtained his Bachelors of Science Degree from The University of Kansas and his Medical Degree from Saint George’s University School of Medicine. He completed his Neurology residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He also completed a Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University and an additional fellowship in Sleep Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Kanarek is board certified in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. His special interest is in sleep disorders, neuropathy, headaches and general neurology.
Emergency Care
We appreciate your telephone calls. Feel free to call us between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If your call is of a medical nature, it will be directed to a nurse who will pull your medical record before returning your call. After discussing your call with the doctor, the nurse will relay his or her instructions to you. Sometimes, the doctor will talk with you directly, depending on the situation. Please telephone our office as early in the day as possible. This allows us to more easily get back to you with the requested information. Calls received after 4:00 p.m. may not be returned until the next business day. If you are experiencing an emergency situation, please go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmology
Dr. Wang graduated from Hebei Medical University in Shijiazhuang, China where she also received a Masters degree in Ophthalmology and completed an Ophthalmology residency. Her Internal Medicine Internship was completed at Nassau University Medical Center and a Neurology Residency at Ohio State University. She also completed a Fellowship in Neurophysiology at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Wang worked with Neurological Consultants of Virginia Beach before transferring to Neurology Specialists in October 2008. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Wang’s clinical interests are in line with her fellowship training and include EEG, EMG, neuromuscular disease, epilepsy and headaches.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Lanoue graduated from Washington and Lee University and Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at EVMS and his Neurology Residency at Vanderbilt University. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is experienced in the use of Botox in movement disorders and has a special interest in dizziness and balance disorders. Dr. Lanoue is affiliated with the Eastern Virginia Medical School Hearing and Balance Center.

Multiple Sclerosis
Ms. Brander completed her undergraduate degree at Norfolk State University and obtained her Masters in Nursing from Walden University as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Brander is certified as a Neuroscience nurse (CNRN), stroke nurse (SCRN), and in emergency neuroscience life support (ENLS). She was the recipient of the CNRN of the Year Award in 2013. Ms. Brander is the president of the Southeastern Virginia American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and is a guest lecturer for various organizations. She has developed stroke education for public, patients, nursing and physicians. She helped lead a rural hospital to become the local area’s first Comprehensive Stroke Program. She is trained in all neurological conditions but has special interest in stroke, dementia and multiple sclerosis. She is an active member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, American Academy of Neurology, and the American Academy of Neuroscience Nurses. Her interest in MS includes cognitive function, mood disorders, acute, new and emerging therapies as well as Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders, and health issues specifically related to women.

All NCT physicians are certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. While many have fellowship training and interest in a particular area (see Our Providers for specifics) they all treat any type of neurological problem. Our physicians will evaluate you, determine the necessity of any diagnostic testing, and work with you to develop a treatment plan.

MRI
If you have had MRI or CT scans pertinent to your problem, our physicians will need to review them. If they have been done locally, we can access most sites electronically. If they were done outside the area, we will need you to obtain them and bring them to our office for your appointment. Our review of these scans will result in a more comprehensive assessment of your problem.

Botox
Our physicians are experienced in the use of botulinum toxin in many clinical settings. Botulinum toxin helps weaken overactive muscles. It is the treatment of choice for many movement disorders such as torticollis, hemifacial spasm, and other focal dystonias or muscle spasms. We are also using botulinum toxin for spasticity related to strokes and other injuries to the nervous system.
