Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmology
The total caseload among all facilities averages 60,000 procedures per year and 6,000 deliveries per year. We provide anesthesia services for a large variety of surgical procedures, with a case mixture that includes general, trauma, bariatric, ENT, orthopedic, vascular, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, obstetric, and others.

Obstetrics
Our staff is heavily involved in teaching programs at local universities and medical schools. Physicians and CRNAs provide instruction to students from Old Dominion University’s School of Nurse Anesthesia. Our physicians are also active in providing instruction for emergency medicine, obstetrics, Surgery, ENT, and other specialty residents and medical students attending Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Labor and Delivery
Good pain relief during labor and delivery enables you to be more comfortable and to more effectively participate in the birth of your baby. The degree of discomfort experienced during labor and delivery varies from patient to patient and from one labor experience to the next. Some women do very well with techniques such as Lamaze, while most request further assistance and thereby use a combination of techniques. Depending upon your labor pattern, labor progress, medical history and your baby’s condition, additional pain management might include intravenous (I.V.) medications or epidural analgesia. The vast majority of women in labor prefer to have epidural analgesia because of the excellent pain relief it provides without sedation. Epidural analgesia has a long history of safety for both mother and baby. Remember, the choice of analgesia is a decision reached by you and your health care team (anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetist, obstetrician, nurse).

Internal Medicine
An anesthesiologist is a doctor of medicine who has completed four years of medical school after graduating from college. Following medical school, today’s anesthesiologist completes four or more years of specialized medical training in the field of anesthesiology, which includes pain management and critical care medicine. Subspecialty fellowship years can also be served for subspecialty board certification in areas such as Chronic Pain Management. Many of our Anesthesiologists are fellowship trained and board certified in additional fields of medicine such as internal medicine.

Ultrasound
Usually, the discomfort patients experience from nerve blocks is similar to that from getting an IV. During your nerve block, an anesthesiologist will offer sedation to improve your comfort and lessen anxiety. A nurse will monitor your vital signs and give you additional sedation, if needed. Then we will clean your skin and locate the exact position of the nerves to be numbed. We use ultrasound for this positioning, which enhances the safety, efficiency and comfort of your procedure. After locating the nerves with ultrasound, your anesthesiologist will carefully inject local anesthetic into the surrounding area using a needle similar in size to an IV. During the next 10-30 minutes, your limb will become warm, heavy, and eventually numb.

Vascular Surgery
Can only be used for Surgery on selected regions of the body. An injection of a local anesthetic medication adjacent to large groups of nerves temporarily prevents pain signals from reaching the brain. For example, for hip, prostate, or vascular Surgery, your anesthesiologist might recommend spinal or epidural anesthesia. You can be sedated throughout Surgery under regional anesthesia, which will cause you to feel sleepy, but you will be able to respond to questions. Some recall is possible and expected.
