Preventive Care

Dental Care
Oral health is very important for all of us, including our dogs and cats. We here at Burke Forest, take dental care very seriously. During each wellness visit, the doctor will perform a nose to tail physical. We will discuss your pets oral health with you.
Vaccination
We are a full service veterinary hospital. We offer wellness care, vaccinations, routine diagnostics testing. Dentistry is also offered for cats and dogs.

Nutritional Counseling
CIV vaccination provides protection against a highly contagious strain of influenza, a virus known as H3N8. This canine “flu” virus causes upper respiratory disease. 80% of infected dogs suffer nasal discharge, lethargy, loss of appetite, persistent cough and fever. Typically we only offer this vaccine for those whose boarding kennels require it. We will continue to monitor this virus and its movements and adjust our recommendation appropriately.
Comprehensive Examination
Today's modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past. Here at Burke Forest, we do a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics, to ensure that a fever or other illness won't be a problem. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet. The handout on anesthesia explains this in greater detail.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Lyme vaccine provides protection against the Lyme bacteria, which is transmitted by ticks that are commonly found most of the U.S., including Virginia. Common symptoms include lethargy, swollen joints and fever. This vaccine is recommended for all dogs that are exposed to ticks, which thrive in areas of vegetation. Good flea and tick prevention is the first line of defense. We recommend monthly flea and tick prevention. The vaccine will help protect animals who are exposed.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
This includes protection against Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper) virus, a lethal virus that can infect your cat’s digestive tract, and two potentially fatal respiratory viruses: Rhinotracheitis and Calici Virus. It is given every 3 years and is recommended for every cat.
Pain Management
Pain Management is a top priority at Burke Forest. Dr. Bowles and Dr. Vanderson will advise you about pain relief for your pet, and how to maintain your pet's good quality of life. Pain relief can be in the form of medication, physical therapy, or alternative treatments. We work very hard to stay updated with the latest advances in companion animal pain management.

This vaccination protects against one of the important microbes that causes “Kennel Cough”, a mixed bacterial and viral infection of the respiratory system. Common symptoms include coughing and gagging. Kennel Cough is highly contagious; the vaccine is recommended for all dogs who visit kennels, grooming facilities, parks, or doggie daycare. Puppies are highly susceptible. It is recommended annually for dogs at risk, but can be boostered every 6 months for those pets who are at the highest risk.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection, which means that the infection can spread from animals to humans and vice versa.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Canine Distemper combination vaccination includes protection against Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza virus. It is given every 3 years after the initial series. We recommend this for all dogs. If your dog likes to swim, hike, or drink from every rain puddle we recommend the Leptospirosis portion of the vaccine be boostered annually. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through urine contamination of water. It is zoonotic (spreading from animals to people) and can be fatal for multiple specieis. It typically affects the liver, kidney, or both depending on the strain.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
This vaccine is recommended for cats that go outdoors, or that contact cats that go outdoors. When necessary, this vaccine is given annually.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through the urine of wildlife. Today, lepto is the number one infectious cause of acute kidney failure in dogs.¹ Common lepto carriers include raccoons, skunks, opposums, squirrels and rats. The lepto bacteria can survive for long periods in water and on wet grass. Infection occurs when dogs wade through or drink from contaminated water sources. The bacteria can enter through a cut in the skin or mucous membranes, such as the eye, nose or mouth.

Veterinary Surgery
Drs. Bowles and Vanderson are both adept at surgical treatments. Dr. Bowles, due to her internship and experience as an emergency veterinarian, has a great deal of surgical skill with both general surgery and emergency surgery including foreign body removal, bladder stone surgery, splenectomy, c-section, and other soft tissue surgeries. At Burke Forest, your pet will receive attentive care before, during and after surgery. In most cases, your pet will go home the same day, and you will be sent home with detailed after-care instructions. If your pet requires orthopedic surgery, we can refer you to one of several talented surgeons in our area.
Spaying and Neutering
Unless you plan to breed your pet, we recommend having it spayed or neutered in order to prevent behavioral problems and help reduce the tragic scene at animal shelters of putting unwanted dogs and cats to sleep. For small breeds, we recommend spaying and neutering at 6 months of age. For large breed females, we recommend spaying at 6-8 months of age. For large breed males, current evidence suggests that delaying the procedure may protect their bones and joints. We recommend neutering large breeds between 1-2 years.

Laboratory Services
We are also here when your pet is ill or injured. We offer in house diagnostics lab testing, x-rays, an in-clinic care for sick pets.
X-Ray
Radiographs can be a critical diagnostic tool. We have recently upgraded to Digital Radiography, so no more waiting for the x-rays to develop! Now we take the x-ray that we want and in seconds it is digitally processed into our state of the art cloud based system. Also now we have the ability to consult radiologists as needed to further diagnose your pets.
Microchipping
Microchipping is the most reliable means of recovering your pet if it gets lost. A chip about the size of a grain of rice is implanted under the skin, usually in the shoulder area. Your pet receives its unique ID number. Animal shelters and veterinary offices have a microchip scanners, and will quickly be able to identify your pet and your contact information.

Dr. Andrea Vanderson is a proud member of the Burke Forest team, having grown up right here in Springfield, VA. She attended Duke University for her undergraduate education, completed a Masters degree at Georgetown University, and earned her doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of California, Davis. After finishing her education, she returned home to Northern Virginia to be closer to family and to once again enjoy a climate with four seasons! Dr. Vanderson's professional interests include the management of chronic conditions, care of senior pets, and dermatology. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Dave, her three children, Ben, Jeff, and Sam, and her spoiled kitty, Figaro. She also enjoys cooking, baking, and doing puzzles.
