Dental Examination
Regular exams are important, not only for the health of your teeth but your whole body. If you are a new patient, we require that you complete a comprehensive exam before beginning treatment.
X-rays
Oral Cancer Screening
The exam starts with a thorough examination of your head, neck, and jaw, followed by an oral cancer screening. We’ll also check your blood pressure and assess your medical history, which includes previous and current health conditions and any medications you take.

Teeth Cleaning
At Oakville Dental Care, we offer perio therapy, which is a supercharged version of a dental cleaning. Using special instruments that penetrate deep into the areas above and below the gum line, perio therapy thoroughly removes all plaque and bacteria, stopping damage and inflammation in its tracks.
Fluoride Treatment
Afterward, we’ll review the x-rays, exam results, and health assessment, and make recommendations for follow-up care. Depending on your situation, a professional cleaning or treatments such as sealants and fluoride varnishes may be performed at your visit. We will also ask you about any fears or concerns you may have.
Dental Sealants
We also use dental sealants, which provide extra protection for the back molars, where most decay occurs in children and teens. As the name suggests, they form a protective surface that “seals off” the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Applying sealants is simple and painless, and one application can last 5 to 10 years.

Fillings
We recommend that all adults with amalgam fillings get them replaced only when they are broken, leaking, or failing. We can evaluate if your amalgam fillings are stable or ready for removal. Smaller composite and amalgam fillings are both similarly durable, and we recommend placing composite fillings when smaller cavities are present.
Resin Composite
Dental amalgam, or silver filling material, is a mixture of mercury, and an alloy of silver, tin and copper. The release of mercury in silver fillings is so small that it is much less than what patients are exposed to in food, air and water. There are, however, other materials that can be used for restorations. These include gold, porcelain, and composite resins.

Dr. Katie Azar is a St. Louis transplant. She was born in England and lived in South Africa before her family moved to Kansas City when she was a young child. She attended The University of Kansas and is an avid Jayhawks fan, but we won't hold that against her. Katie met her husband, Joe, while attending Creighton University School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, they returned to Joe’s hometown of St. Louis, where Joe is an orthodontist at Azar Orthodontics in Webster Groves. Katie hails from a family of dentists. Her love of educating and providing dental care began in high school when she first worked as a dental assistant to her father. Katie and Joe have three children, Henry (5), Olive (2), and Collins (1).
