Treatment - The final step and the key to full recovery and return to activity is orthopedic treatment such as physical therapy. PT involves a wide array of treatments, such as pain-relieving and modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation, as well as targeted strengthening and stretching exercises to restore strength and range of motion.
MRI
For joint pain and several orthopedic conditions, arthroscopic surgery is a fast, yet thorough operation. With use of the arthroscope, or camera, Dr. Burke has an additional guide for joint reconstruction, repositioning, and other actions. Patients with ankle, elbow, knee, or shoulder pain have arthroscopy as an option for their pain relief and treatment. After full evaluation, with an MRI or another form of radiology, Dr. Burke can assess the joint and which orthopedic service will work in the patient’s advantage.
Radiology
Special radiology scans take a deeper look at the musculoskeletal system so Dr. Burke can recommend the most beneficial treatment depending on the results. A physical examination shows some symptoms of specific orthopedic conditions, but technological imaging reveals the exact location and problem within the body.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
MRIs use magnets and a computer algorithm to map out images for the orthopedic physician to gain a clearer picture of the area under treatment. It is commonly used to look at muscle tissue, ligaments, cartilage, discs, and other soft tissues that do not appear well or at all on an X-ray or CT scan.

Arthroscopy is a technique Dr. Burke uses for reconstructive trauma in his patients. This outpatient procedure improves surgery performance since a small camera looks inside any of the joints and assists during the arthroscopy. A small incision allows for the arthroscope to enter the joint. Dr. Burke and his surgery assistants can see the inside of the joint on a monitor with full 3D details of the orthopedic injury or disease. Special arthroscopic instruments assess in the cleaning or repair of joint tissues with previous damage.

Arthroscopy
Patients will need to schedule weekly physical therapy appointments with Dr. Burke. Arthroscopy will leave patients with temporary numbness around the ankle, elbow, knee or shoulder, but this sensation will fade during the short recovery.

Reconstructive Surgery

One form of treatment Dr. Burke Orthopedics offers is computer assisted joint replacement surgery or arthroplasty with the use of technology provided through OrthAlign® products. OrthAlign® provides visual navigation of a joint procedure, assisting the surgeon with live information in the palm of their hand to accurately perform specific joint replacement operations. This reconstructive surgery comes in two forms: total replacement and partial replacement. Both forms of arthroplasty have a single goal, which is to enhance the patient’s range-of-motion without painful symptoms. Dr. Burke may recommend total joint replacement when the specific joint is beyond the point of repair, but when the joint has some functionality, may suggest partial joint replacement as a better option.

Sports Medicine
Dr. Robert Burke specializes in Sports Medicine, focusing his care on athletic injury treatments that utilize the latest medical research and technology. His goal is to allow patients to recover from an injury more rapidly, allowing them to quickly return to their sport and everyday activities. Physical Therapy
The MACI® Procedure (autologous cultured chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane) is a specialized procedure for the treatment of the knees. It is a surgical option indicated for cartilage defects in the knee. When more conservative interventions such as physical therapy or steroid injections have failed to relieve pain, the procedure allows the surgeon to implant the patient’s own normal articular cartilage. It is completed by harvesting a collection of the patient’s own (autologous) healthy cartilage taken from a non-weight bearing position. This autologous cartilage contains chondrocyte cells which are considered to be the building blocks of cartilage. These cells are then placed onto a membrane of collagen which encourages expansion of these cells, and in turn, new healthy cartilage. Your surgeon will most likely remove the area of damaged tissue on the affected knee. Next, the MACI® implant will be surgically placed at the location of cartilage damage and absorbed back into your own tissue. Multiple MACI® implants may be used at one time.
