Established in 1914, the Norwich City Police Department is a law enforcement agency that protects the lives and property of citizens and visitors, preserves peace, prevents crime and disorder and safeguards personal liberties. The department maintains a communication center that offers emergency fire, police and medical response services. It employs a staff of more than 20 full-time, trained sworn officers. The Norwich City Police Department operates a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations. In addition, the department operates a jail. It maintains a location in Norwich, N.Y.
