What can I do to protect my pet? Heartworm disease is preventable! Dogs should be tested annually and before starting prevention. Provide heartworm prevention 12 months of the year. Prevention is the safest and most cost-effective option, but treatment is available for dogs (although costly and lengthy). Cats should be tested before starting prevention and re-tested as the veterinarian deems appropriate. There is NO treatment in cats, so prevention is critical and the only means of protection.

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
We routinely perform orthopedic surgeries, which are procedures related to bones and joints. Common orthopedic pet surgeries include bone fracture repair, cruciate ligament repair, extracapsular techniques, leg or toe amputation, patellar luxation repair, and surgeries to treat hip dysplasia, including femoral head ostectomy (FHO).

Following completion of her five-course orthopedic surgery training at the University of Tennessee, she has performed many cruciate ligament repairs, patellar luxation stabilization, fracture platings and external fixators, and hip luxation repairs.

Kidney Disease Treatment
Dr. Jory Olsen graduated from veterinary school at the University of California at Davis in 1988. He completed an internship at Texas A&M University before returning to UC Davis for a residency. His primary interests during the residency were intestinal disease and food allergies, kidney disease and progression of degenerative disease, cancer therapy, and novel therapy for fungal disease.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease is the most common disease in dogs. Recent studies show that 85% of cats and 92% of dogs over age 3 have periodontal disease.
Cancer Treatment
Dr. Jory Olsen moved to Atlanta in 1992 and joined the Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialty Practice staff. In 1994 she took ownership of the practice and moved to the present location in 1997. The practice is based on the ultrasound skills established by over 20,000 ultrasound examinations, chemotherapy treatments for a variety of cancers but focusing on lymphoma, endoscopic evaluation of the intestinal tract, respiratory tract, and general endocrine and hematologic internal medicine experience. Dr. Jory Olsen is boarded in small animal internal medicine with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). The majority of cases seen are challenging referral medical patients that have failed to respond to primary care and other referral center care.

Our veterinarians are experienced in various soft tissue pet surgeries, the most routinely performed procedures being spay/neuters and mass/tumor removals. Other examples of veterinary soft tissue surgeries include intestinal foreign body removal, laceration and wound repair, eye surgery, perineal urethrostomy, mastectomy, splenectomy, and other specialized surgeries.

Laser Surgery
Dr. Olsen started her practice in 1999. She has performed laser surgery for tumor removals, declaws and soft palate resections, and other oral surgery since 1999. She has performed many challenging surgical procedures because of her skills and association with the internal medicine practice. Among those surgeries are patent ductus arteriosis closure, adrenal tumor removal (including removal of invasion into major vessels), liver lobe removal, lung lobe removal, bile duct rerouting (cholecystoduodenostomy), intestinal rerouting (bilroth), pericardectomy, thoracic duct ligation, laryngeal tie back, rectal tumor removal by eversion and prolapse.
Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
Greater Atlanta Veterinary Medical Group recommends waiting until your pet is at least 6 months of age before seeking a spay or neuter procedure. However, our spay and neuter policy is on a case by case basis. Studies show that different sizes and breeds have different spay & nueter requirements.

Laboratory Services
For puppies and kittens, we need to see them on a more frequent schedule during their first year of life. For pets over age 7, we recommend exams and blood work every 6 months to help us detect diseases and issues before they become a problem.
