The New York City Department of Environmental Protection delivers drinking water to more than 9 million state residents. The department operates more than 13,000 miles of water mains and sewers within the city and over 10 treatment plants that process nearly 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater a day. In addition, the department enforces the city s noise, air and hazardous materials code. It has various bureaus and offices, including office of the agency chief contracting officer, customer services, engineering design and construction, environmental compliance and water supply. The department s Environmental Control Board is a judicial entity that provides hearings on notices of violation issued by other city agencies for disobeying laws and rules. Its bureau of engineering design and construction plans designs and constructs water quality-related capital projects. The department of environmental protection is operated by the New York City.
