Dental Examination
Your initial appointment will consist of a comprehensive exam in addition to your cleaning. Dr. Murdoch will perform a detailed examination to look for oral cancer, cysts, or evidence of TMJ. He will do a meticulous tooth by tooth check to identify cavities, and examine all previous treatment and restorations.
X-rays
Oral Cancer Screening
During your dental exam, Dr. Murdoch will check your neck and oral tissues for any abnormalities or suspicious areas. Screening for early changes in the oral tissue can help detect cancer at a stage when it can be more successfully treated. Oral cancer screening is recommended annually, just as a PAP test for women or a PSA test for men. Smoking, especially when combined with heavy alcohol consumption, is the primary risk for oral cancer today. This lethal combination is estimated to be responsible for about 75% of the oral cancer diagnosed in the United States.

Teeth Cleaning
Brushing and Cleaning: For the first day after the extraction, avoid brushing the area near the extraction. After that, you can resume gentle cleaning. Avoid commercial mouth rinses, because they have a tendency to irritate the extraction site. 24 hours after the extraction, you can rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon in a cup of water) after meals and before bed. This will help keep the swelling at a minimum.
Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
Each time you have your teeth cleaned, in addition to the thorough cleaning, polishing and examination of your teeth, we also take the time to assist our patients by developing individualized oral hygiene habits and routines they can use at home to keep their teeth healthy. Dr. Murdoch and our hygienist, will also make suggestions for preventative measures such as fluoride, sealants or night guards (to help with TMJ problems). If it is determined that you are suffering from gingivitis or a more severe gum disease, we may recommend Root Planing and Scaling (RP&S) to help prevent bone loss and help you keep your teeth.

Fillings
With state-of-the-art materials and techniques, we can repair cracked, or chipped teeth, replace amalgam fillings, whiten and straighten teeth.
Resin Composite
Bonding offers several benefits. It is quick, affordable and relatively painless. The composite resin is very flexible and allows for expanding and contracting with your natural tooth. This prevents cracks and tooth loss. One point to consider with bonding is that resin is not as strong as the enamel on your natural tooth and is more prone to staining, chipping and breakage than your own teeth. Bonding usually lasts around five years before needing to be repaired.
Veneers
Your smile is meant to be shared with the world. Our goal is to leave our patients with a smile that they are proud of. Porcelain veneers can fix those minor imperfections, with a natural tooth-colored overlay. This is a versatile cosmetic option, bringing your desired smile to life.
Crowns
Dr. Murdoch will evaluate the current condition of each tooth including those that are chipped, broken, missing, or have loose-fitting fillings and crowns. He may recommend a full series of x-rays and models. All your information will be evaluated and compiled to customize a treatment plan specific to your individual needs.
Bridges
Crowns and bridges can be fabricated with different materials. In our office, because all of our crowns are all made in a high quality dental lab, we are able to offer several different types of crowns; ceramic, porcelain fused to a gold alloy framework and an all gold alloy. Each material has its advantages in different circumstances.
Dental Bonding
Many times anesthesia is not necessary. However, if there is decay being removed Dr. Murdoch may choose to use local anesthesia for your comfort.
Restorative Dentistry
My practice has a strong emphasis on preventive and restorative dentistry. I was one of the first dentists in the Denver area to practice Laser Dentistry and have continued for 18 years. Laser dentistry is far more gentle to the tooth structure which minimizes inflammation, trauma and speeds healing time. If you have apprehension in the dental chair, we also offer nitrous oxide, which can help to reduce dental anxiety. Another important area of emphasis is ensuring that all parts of the masticatory system (teeth, muscles, joins and soft tissue) function together properly. This includes effectively eliminating many chronic cases of TMJ pain.

Dentures
When you lose some or all of your teeth, a denture can be used to help restore a natural appearance and function for eating and talking. Dentures can have a metal or plastic (acrylic) framework, usually, an upper denture is plastic. A full denture is the normal treatment for a patient without any teeth. Sometimes patients have difficulty adapting to them as they are held in place by relatively weak forces when compared to real teeth. When you lose teeth, the bone that supported them resorbs over time. This leads to problems later as dentures and partials may start to feel lose. Your face may start to appear sunken and eating may become more difficult. Relining the denture will eliminate the discomfort.
Overdentures
This type of replacement called an overdenture, provides people with a peace of mind by preventing dentures from slipping while talking or eating without the use of adhesives. Implant dentures allow you to chew your food better and speak more clearly. The natural occurrence of bone resorption with tooth loss is dramatically reduced. The preservation of bone helps control facial contour changes that lead to premature wrinkles and aging. Implants are a good alternative or additive that can be used instead of, or in conjunction with "immediate dentures". Immediate dentures are those that can be delivered in a day.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Tooth Extractions
Dr. Murdoch may determine it is necessary to extract your tooth. There are a number of reasons why a tooth might need to be extracted. Some of them could be that your teeth are severely decayed, you may have advanced periodontal disease, your tooth has broken in a way that it cannot be repaired, or in preparation for the orthodontic treatment. Still other teeth may need to be removed because they are not positioned correctly in your mouth. Before Dr. Murdoch extracts a tooth, he will explain to your the reason it needs to be pulled and discuss your options with you. In addition, he may prepare an individualized treatment plan for you. If you have questions, be sure to discuss them with Dr. Murdoch before the extraction(s).
