Electrical Stimulation using a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) Unit. TENS is a noninvasive therapeutic pain management modality that is used alone or in conjunction with pain medications or other pain-management techniques. A TENS unit is used to transmit low-voltage electrical currents through the skin to the underlying nerves at the area where pain occurs. TENS is used to treat both chronic and acute pain associated with musculoskeletal problems (e.g., arthritis, low back pain), dental problems and procedures, bursitis, menstruation, urinary incontinence, surgical procedures, labor and delivery, fracture pain, and traumatic injuries. TENS is also used as an adjunct treatment for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Your physical therapist at Choice One will conduct a thorough examination of your affected hand or hands to determine the root cause of your hand pain, as treatment will be different depending on the underlying source of pain. Many carpal tunnel syndrome patients require daily stretching exercises and massage therapy. Some patients will also need to cease activity with the affected hand, as frequent repetitive motion is often the underlying cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.

We recommend the use of this type of modality to aid in the rehabilitation of muscles following sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and work-related injuries to ease acute muscle spasms and pain. By increasing blood flow to and from muscles, the stimulation acts as a pump, helping to remove lactic acid, a common waste product found in overused or damaged muscles. This type of stimulation also serves to increase blood flow to and from the muscles, reducing edema (inflammation) and promoting quicker recovery.

Manual therapy is a group of effective techniques designed to decrease pain and improve range of motion and flexibility to stiff joints and muscles. Manual therapy involves one-on-one, hands-on, active and passive techniques. It is most effective when combined with therapeutic exercise and patient education. Before designing a treatment program, your physical therapist will first assess joint structure and mobility; muscle length, strength and balance; and the movement coordination of any injured joints and muscles in functional patterns.
