Oral Cancer Screening
Another important part of preventive care is having a number of quick exams and evaluations preformed when you get your teeth cleaned. Your hygienist and dentist will check your gums and the bone around your teeth for any signs of periodontal disease, tooth decay, check your existing restoration and evaluate your bite for occlusion problems. We also will preforms an oral cancer screening, where we will examine your lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums, and look for any signs of oral cancer.

Teeth Cleaning
Dental cleaning or a prophy is a procedure whereby calculus, stain, and other accretions are removed from the crowns and roots of the teeth, and the enamel surfaces are polished. Cleanings are recommended every six months and can start for children as early as 3, with a “happy visit.”

Fillings
Resin Composite
Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement.
Veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over a tooth surface, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer, composite and dental porcelain. A composite veneer may be directly placed (built-up in the mouth), or indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental laboratory, and later bonded to the tooth, typically using a resin cement. In contrast, a porcelain veneer may only be indirectly fabricated.
Crowns
A tooth-like crown made of porcelain is used to restore a tooth after the decay has been removed. Crowns are also used to restore chipped teeth, broken teeth, gaps in teeth, and other damage. Also called “caps,” porcelain crowns resemble natural looking teeth in shape and color. All metal crowns are also sometimes used and have the shape of real teeth, but are made of gold or silver.

Oral Surgery
Dr. Pitts joined Family Dentistry of Texoma in February 2010. He has done extensive training through continuing education in Oral Surgery, Third Molar Removal, Implant Surgery and Restoration, and Orthodontics. Dr. Pitts has completed the Implant Continuum at Baylor College of Dentistry and is accomplished in Implant Surgery and Bone Grafting associated with Implant Dentistry. Dr. Pitts is a member of The American Orthodontic Society and has completed over 450 hours in continuing education in orthodontics to become proficient to treat even the most complicated orthodontic cases. He has also received the Achievement award from the Board of Directors at the American Orthodontic Society. He is also a member of The Academy of Osseointegration, The Oral Congress of Oral Implantologists, and The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Tooth Extractions
A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to render the tooth non-restorable. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed here in our office under IV sedation, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment.
Bone Grafting

Orthodontics
Studies show that 75 percent of Americans suffer from malocclusion (literally “bad bite”) and could benefit from orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics not only improves appearance, but makes teeth easier to clean, prevents uneven wear on teeth, reduces stress on bones and gums, and can prevent headaches and jaw pain due to poor alignment.
Invisalign Orthodontics
Wire braces are not always required to treat orthodontic conditions. Clear aligners such as Invisalign and Clear Correct can be worn over the teeth to correct crowding and spaces between teeth. These tooth aligners are clear and practically unnoticeable to others. This can be a great way to achieve the smile you desire, without the esthetic concerns of wearing traditional wire braces.
Braces
By applying constant gentle pressure in a specific direction, braces can slowly move teeth through the supporting bone to a new position. Springs and wires put pressure on teeth in order to straighten them. The pressure causes bone in the jaw to dissolve in front of the moving tooth as new bone grows behind the tooth. Braces and other appliances may be removable or fixed and are made of clear or colored metal, ceramic or plastic. Removable appliances are often plastic plates that fit into the roof of the mouth and clip onto a tooth.

Teeth Whitening
A child’s deciduous teeth are generally whiter than the adult teeth that follow. As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes less porous. Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, foods and tobacco. Certain antibiotic medications can also cause teeth stains or a reduction in the brilliance of the enamel.
