Kidney Stones
There are four small parathyroid glands located just behind the thyroid gland—each only about the size of a grain of rice. Although similar in name, the parathyroid glands have nothing to do with the function of the thyroid. The role of each parathyroid gland is to constantly regulate the level of calcium in the blood, much like a thermostat regulates the heat inside a home. With hyperparathyroidism, one or more overactive parathyroid glands result in too much calcium in the blood, increasing the risk for bone fractures or kidney stones. Much less common is hypoparathyroidism, which is caused by one or more underactive parathyroid glands.
Colon Cancer
Increased Risk of Cancer: Twice as many women with a BMI greater than 29 had colon cancer as women with a BMI less than 21. A gain of more than 20 pounds, from age 18 to 40, doubles a woman's risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. The risk of endometrial cancer is three times higher among women with a BMI of 30 or higher, compared to women in the normal weight range.

Hypothyroidism
Having an underactive thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism, is a common condition in adults. The thyroid is a gland that regulates the body’s energy. The problem occurs when the thyroid gland stops producing enough of the thyroid hormones. When the thyroid does not produce enough hormones, it slows down the body’s metabolism, and the gland shrinks as its cells are destroyed by the patient’s immune system.

Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid nodules are very common and the chance of such a nodule harboring cancer is generally small. Some thyroid nodules, however, warrant investigation for possible malignancy because of their size, other ultrasound characteristics, or the presence of risk factors for thyroid cancer such as a family history of this condition or radiation exposure.

Ultrasound
Dr. Huberman is accredited with Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU). This is a professional certification in the field of neck ultrasonography for physicians who perform consultations and diagnostic evaluations for thyroid and parathyroid disorders through both diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsies.
MRI
Although some people might experience symptoms of thyroid cancer, such as pain or swelling in the neck, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, most cases present without any symptoms. The initial sign might be a lump in the thyroid gland detected during a routine physical exam, or it might be an abnormal image of the thyroid detected when an MRI or CT of the chest or spine is performed for an unrelated reason. Nodules on the thyroid are overwhelmingly benign, with less than 15 percent being malignant. Diagnosis is confirmed with a combination of a detailed history, blood tests for hormone levels, imaging tests, and a fine-needle aspiration biopsy if necessary. Chemotherapy
Thyroid cancers usually respond well to surgery that removes the thyroid gland and any involved lymph nodes. Chemotherapy and radiation are usually not necessary. Follow-up therapy might involve treatment with radioactive iodine to destroy any remaining malignant cells and decrease recurrence of the disease. Thyroid medication is then used to prevent underactive thyroid function, known as hypothyroidism.
