The future of American theatre depends on a regular influx of new works, to which Directors Company is committed, and the collaborative process we encourage involves not only the playwright and director, but audiences as well, who play a part in the emergence of original works giving voice to contemporary concerns. Directors Company would like to express its gratitude to the following organizations for their ongoing support: In the MAINSTAGE PRODUCTION DIVISION, fully mounted productions showcase to the public the work of new talent. Most recently, Irena's Vow, a new play by Dan Gordon, was developed through script work and readings at Directors Company. Directed by Artistic/Producing Director Michael Parva, it debuted Off-Broadway at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. After an extended successful Off-Broadway run, the play transferred to Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre, receiving a nomination by the Outer Critics Circle for Outstanding New Broadway Play. Prior to transferring to Broadway, Directors Company was invited to present a staged reading of the play at the United Nations for the diplomatic community. In an unprecedented occurrence for a commercial, Broadway run, talk-back sessions with Jeannie Opdyke Smith, real-life daughter of Irena Opdyke, of whom the play is based occurred after every performance. After every performance of the Broadway run of Irena's Vow, unprecedented these Question and Answer sessions further connected and engaged the community in not only the play itself, but to the story of one of the most courageous and unsung heroines of World War II. Our DEVELOPMENT DIVISION is a forum, which includes our NEW WORKS SERIES, for directors and playwrights to develop and present staged readings and workshops of promising new plays and musicals for consideration as future full productions. Our development process is open to the public through free presentations, giving the audience a sneak peak into the early stages of the creation of an original theatrical work.
