Dental Examination

X-rays
During this appointment, Dr. Kissel will listen as you describe your problem areas and concerns, examine your mouth, and take dental x-rays. Advanced images may be taken either at this initial appointment or at a future pre-op appointment in order to help Dr. Kissel plan for your surgery.

Teeth Cleaning
Our mouths are full of bacteria, which cause plaque to form on our teeth. While proper brushing and flossing can remove plaque, patients who do not practice proper oral hygiene will see their plaque turn into tartar, which can only be removed by professional teeth cleaning.

Patient 2 had a very gummy smile and had in fact trained herself to limit the extent of her smile, not to show her gums. Again using very minimally invasive techniques, we were able to expose the enamel of her teeth which was hiding under the gum tissue. She now felt much more comfortable with the amount of gum tissue showing and decided to pursue dental veneers to close the spaces and straighten her teeth. This procedure really changed her life.

Dentures
Immediately after surgery, you’ll be placed on a soft food diet and need to avoid chewing on your surgical site. If you normally wear dentures, you may not be able to do so in the first few days of healing. If you happen to have adjacent teeth next to the surgical site, you may have a temporary bridge placed to protect the surgical site.

Dental Implants

Dr. Kissel is one of the first periodontists to combine the advantages of the microscope with LANAP. Used together, these instruments allow for the removal of more tartar and significantly increase the likelihood of reattachment of gum tissue or regeneration of bone to your tooth. It can also be used to treat ailing implants.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Using microsurgery-guided tissue regeneration is a minor surgical procedure, with little to no discomfort, and no swelling. You will need to carefully follow your aftercare instructions to ensure your proper recovery from the oral surgery.
Jaw Surgery
Patient 4 has a skeletal overgrowth of her upper jaw. She declined jaw surgery but did pursue cosmetic crown lengthening. She also trained herself to limit how much gum tissue she showed. She was so happy she completed the procedure, it was very easy for her and the results changed her life.
Gum Surgery
Perioscopy, the procedure performed with the Perioscope, is a non-surgical procedure that allows me to treat and diagnose areas below the gum line that are affected by periodontal disease by using advanced video, lighting, and magnification technology. In most circumstances, it can also avert the need for gum surgery.
Osseous Surgery
Osseous surgery reshapes the bone that holds your teeth in place. The goal is to reduce pocketing and to stop the progress of periodontal disease.
Tooth Extractions
Before you make the decision to have a tooth extraction, we recommend meeting with an experienced periodontist. Dr. Scott Kissel uses a conservative approach to guide tooth extraction patients through a comprehensive diagnosis. Often, he can help you preserve teeth that have decay and or bone loss ( periodontal disease ). In cases that do require tooth extraction, he conducts procedures using gentle and accurate microsurgical techniques.
Ridge Augmentation
To prepare for your dental implants and encourage them to fuse with your jawbone, Dr. Kissel recommends socket preservation and ridge augmentation to prevent bone resorption and create the best possible anchor for your new teeth.
Bone Grafting
The process of simultaneously removing a tooth and performing a bone grafting surgery is called socket preservation. This procedure prevents jaw bone resorption from ever taking place. First, the extraction of the tooth must be performed in a conservative manner, so as to promote fast healing. To ensure this, periodontist Dr. Kissel typically uses microsurgery techniques when extracting the affected tooth.
