Ants
Aside from the numerous small holes they will leave behind, armadillos dig a burrow which is their main home. They will curl up and sleep in those burrows for up to sixteen hours a day. They look for their food mostly during the early morning hours and the late evening. However, you may find one out during the day on crisper afternoons to soak up the sun.The burrows are also used during the winter for armadillos to hibernate in. Burrows are easy to identify as they can be up to 15 feet wide! Armadillos will eat meats as well as vegetation and fruits, although they normally are found to eat insects and their larvae. They love to find beetles, and ants, as they are closely related to the anteater family.
Fleas
Opossums also like to make their home in your attic. They will exploit any opening they find in your roof line including openings in the soffit, the shingle space, roof valleys, roof vents, air conditioning openings, and more, and if a hole isn’t large enough the opossum will chew and scratch at the weak spot they’ve found until they have created a space large enough for them to move in and out of with ease. While in your attic the possum will create a habitat for itself that will include chewing on your insulation, making a nest for itself and any babies it will have during the spring months. The mother will carry her young in her pouch, she is a marsupial, for several months, but soon the young ones will outgrow the pouch and will use the nest space she created in your attic. Possums also carry fleas and ticks and can create many problems for your domestic house pets including the continuation of a flea infestation. If you are having a problem with fleas on your pets and the vet’s office isn’t able to help control the problem, you may have a possum or a family of possums living in your yard carrying fleas and causing the infestation.
Cockroaches
If you’ve never smelled bat guano before, it can be hard to explain the very distinctive odor that comes with it. It’s very musty smelling, very overpowering, and with an acidic almost lingering smell. Once you smell it once, you’ll recognize it forever. Most times, bat guano covers large areas, and can get very deep. It is also known for being able to eat away at wood and drywall, and is an excellent source for mold to grow. Guano also attracts cockroaches, and if there’s one thing worse than bats, its bats AND cockroaches.

Another disease spread through raccoon droppings is leptospirosis, this is also carried in their urine. This does require direct contact with urine or feces, so while you may think to wear gloves, your cat Mr. Flufferton will not and can easily contract this.

Keeping the lawn trimmed is very important, snakes will gravitate towards tall grass as protection from their natural enemies. Piles of wood or leaves will also attract snakes to the area, they use these as a shady resting spot to cool down if they get too hot in the sun. If you have small children you will also want to keep their toys out of the yard, as these can be tempting for snakes to hide in as well. Snakes are known for turning up in pools and pool pumps as well, so it is important to properly maintain any standing water you may have near your home, this can include pools and ponds. If you do notice a snake in your yard, it is important to ensure that there are no access points on your home, where the snake could potentially get curious and wander (slither) inside.

Opossums

Opossums do not usually build their own homes, they just take over abandoned nests from other animals. They typically live in a wooded area, where they have plenty of access to food and water.

You have probably encountered one of these cute little armored animals before. In Spanish, the name armadillo translates to “little armored one”. Armadillos are native to Central America, as they typically seek warmer habitats, however the Nine-Banded Armadillo has migrated its way into the southern states in America. Armadillos prefer hot climates, as they have no real fatty tissue on their bodies to keep warm, and they prefer a looser sand-like soil to dig their burrows in. Armadillos leave tiny holes in their wake as they search through the ground for insects with their snouts. They have poor eyesight so they will walk slowly, following their keen sense of smell. They live in burrows and so in order to dig them, armadillos are also equipped with sharp claws and strong legs.
